The boxing scenes are competent but lack the emotional weight of those in Raging Bull or, more recently, Million Dollar Baby. But the film is not the Oscar-caliber masterpiece it’s being sold as. It’s hard (perhaps impossible) not to be moved by Jim Braddock’s life. Although the emphasis is typically on Braddock, Giamatti really conveys the feeling that Joe is elated by how his fate shifts.Ĭinderella Man is obviously a great – and inspirational – story. When Braddock starts winning, Joe’s luck changes as well. Joe is a true friend who looks out for Braddock even while his own fortunes are starting crumble. After turning in flawless performances in American Splendor and Sideways, Giamatti takes a supporting role this time but does an equally great job with it. Paul Giamatti is also outstanding as Joe Gould. She makes Mae a very influential character in the story because, in a lot of ways, she’s the moral center. When he does step in the ring, she can’t even listen on the radio because it’s too painful to think of him getting punched. There’s an interesting dynamic between Braddock and Mae near the end she fears he will be hurt or killed in the ring, whereas he sees fighting as the most logical way to dig the family out of its financial hole. She prepares for any situation that may arise. Where Braddock is the dreamer who refuses to surrender the dream, Mae is the practical one. Renee Zellweger does not play a stereotypical “wife role” here. ( Gladiator and Master and Commander show other sides of this ability.) The actor always projects a natural self-confidence that makes us believe in his ability to survive. This is the type of role at which Crowe excels. ![]() He steadfastly clings to the idea that his family’s luck will eventually improve. No matter how dire things get, Braddock refuses to go down for the count. His performance is one of quiet determination. Russell Crowe does a superb job playing Braddock. This is the kind of movie actors dream about because the roles are so juicy. (During his time on the docks, his left hand gains strength, which helps in the ring.) Suddenly, Jim Braddock is on top again. To everyone’s astonishment, he actually wins the world heavyweight championship. In other words, this is Braddock’s chance to make a few bucks for a one-time fight. Joe explains that no “legitimate” boxer will step in so quickly without a formal training period. The commission needs someone to fill in at the last second. One of the opponents in a major upcoming title fight has bowed out due to illness. Luck turns around when Joe shows up one day with an offer. His lowest point is reached when he wanders back into Madison Square Garden and humbly begs for money from his former employers. It’s still not enough to pay all the bills. To make ends meet, Braddock works occasionally at a local dock. The boxing commission revokes his license because of his inability to put on a “show.” His trainer, Joe Gould (Paul Giamatti), is still a friend, but there’s little Joe can do. ![]() Meanwhile, Mae fills a milk bottle with water to make it last longer, and the children complain of hunger.ĭue to a broken right hand, Braddock can no longer fight. Braddock’s nice home has turned into a dingy basement apartment and his fancy suit has been replaced by worn-out clothing. The shot dissolves into another that takes place four years later, when the Great Depression is in full swing. After the fight, he returns to his spacious home where wife Mae (Renee Zellweger) and children wait for him. When the film opens, we see Braddock in the ring, enjoying the successful knockout of an opponent. On paper, there is no penalty in terms of advertised performance by choosing the Aero 3060Ti over other 3060Tis. At least for now, it appears that the only way to get this card is to import it from outside the USA. The card does show up on MSI’s USA website, but I was unable to locate a single listing for sale from any US based retailer. We purchased this Aero 3060Ti at street prices, which at the time of writing, is $1099 from a single Chinese third-party seller on New Egg. The card we are reviewing is not a manufacture supplied testing sample. You can’t get this card at MSRP currently in the USA. It doesn’t matter what the MSRP of the Aero 3060Ti is. Only time will tell if this becomes a limiting factor, but if you look back to the GTX 970 and 980, their usefulness has been limited by their 4GB of memory, while the 980Ti continues to provide good performance levels with 6GB of VRAM. This will be the third generation of $400 to $500 class cards with only 8GB of memory, and may shorten the effective lifetime of the cards as games become more demanding. Nvidia’s choice to design this generation of cards to use the same amount of memory we’ve seen in the last two generations of cards is at the heart of the issue. The memory issue has little to do with MSI. The core clock is listed at 1695MHz for the boost clock, and like every other 3060ti, it comes with a disappointingly small 8GB of GDDR6 memory. Display output includes three DisplayPort 1.4a ports, and a single HDMI 2.1 port. It features a single axial fan, and a single 8-pin power connector. In terms of size, the card is a mere 172x125x43 mm. Unfortunately, other cases may require more modification. Fortunately, the CCD MI-6 can easily be adjusted to accept the card. In my CCD MI-6 test case, the backplate caused minor clearance issue that was resolved by removing four rubber spacers. ![]() When it comes to small form factor graphics cards, a back plate is less desirable as it can interfere with what minimal clearances your case may have. The fan has fewer blades, but they are a larger diameter than the Aero 1070 that we have for comparison. The plastic cover on the front is nothing special, and virtually identical to the previous Aero ITX models. The Aero 3060Ti is very compact but sports a heft to it. If you fit into that category, the question isn’t so much of “Are you going to buy it?”, but rather “What you can expect when you get it?”. Three centimeters may not sound like much, but in the small form factor world it’s the difference between a card that fits and buying a new case.įor those that need a card this small and want a 3060Ti, this is their only option. On the down side (from the perspective of a user I'm sure game devs would appreciate this point), it makes it a bit more difficult to extract the images/audio files/other files in question (but not completely impossible).įor this, we need a program called a Flash decompiler. To generate an electric field, the flat area on the disc’s top surface must be metalized. It has a second ceramic layer sandwiching the substrate. One variation on the bender actuator is called the trimorph. Typical characteristics include deflection of several tenths of a millimeter and forces up to 1 N. One end of the actuator is usually fixed, so motion gets converted to a bending movement.īender actuators can be designed to have a range of possible forces and motions, and they are well-suited for use in pneumatic valves. This piece is also joined all along one side to a conductive substrate. ![]() Piezo elements can be crafted into several types of actuators, depending on what the needs are: disc transducers, bender actuators or piezo stacks.īender actuators are rectangular with a piece of piezo ceramic material that has been rendered conductive on both surfaces. In applications that need to be extremely energy-efficient, it is even possible to recover the charging energy when the drive is reset and then use it again for the next charging operation. Electrical power is calculated as voltage × current, so the power is zero if no more current flows. Current only flows while the capacitor is charging, and flow drops to zero when charging is complete. In electrical terms, a piezo element is a capacitor consisting of two electrically conductive plates and the ceramic piezo material between them acting as a dielectric. This is one advantage of piezoelectric valves and drives. These shape changes can be harnessed to power a drive and be created using almost zero power. Using strong electric fields, engineers can give some ceramics piezoelectric properties that make them change shape when a voltage is applied. ![]() They found some materials, usually ceramics with conductive surfaces, convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice-versa. The piezoelectric effect (from the Greek word for “pressing”) was discovered in 1880 by the brothers Jacques and Pierre Curie, the latter being the husband of Marie Curie. This lets them generate mechanical motion and be used as oscillators. The inverse piezoelectric effect, precisely the opposite, forces piezo elements to change shape when a voltage is applied to them. Piezo elements are electromechanical transducers that convert mechanical forces (pressure, tensile stress or acceleration) into voltages. No separate scanner is used in this configuration, because ImageCast X records voter choices directly into the voting system’s memory. The Dominion Voting Systems ImageCast Central ballot counter system is a batch-fed central ballot scanner and tabulator using COTS hardware, coupled with custom-made ballot processing application software. ImageCast X Direct Recording Electronic Voting MachineĮlection jurisdictions can elect to use ImageCast X as a DRE voting machine, with or without an optional voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT). As of 2023, Dominion tabulators count votes by reading the computerized QR code, not the human-readable text that the voter sees, although the company is developing scanners that read human-readable voter marks. The scanner most commonly used with ImageCast X is the ImageCast Precinct hand-fed scanner. To cast their vote, a voter must insert the printed paper ballot into a separate tabulator. As of 2023, Dominion is nearing production of BMDs that print voter selections in only human-readable form (and, relatedly, scanners that read human-readable voter marks), without selections being encoded in QR codes-this has been under development since 2019, when Colorado decided to prohibit the use of QR codes on ballots. Currently, the ImageCast X BMD on the market encodes the voter choices in a non-human readable QR code. Unless configured as a full-face ballot, the paper record lists only the voters’ choice(s) in each contest. Accordingly, after reviewing choices on the summary page, the voter selects when to print a paper record of their choices. When configured exclusively as a ballot marking device (which is how most jurisdictions deploy it), ImageCast X does not have scanning or tabulating capabilities. The ATI can also support headphones for voters who are visually impaired, or paddles or sip-and-puff devices for voters with dexterity impairments.ĭepending on how jurisdictions choose to configure the ImageCast X, after voters have had the opportunity to review all choices on the summary page, the method of casting the ballot differs. ImageCast X supports accessible voting through an optional tethered Audio-Tactile Interface (ATI), which is a “game controller” style console that includes tactile navigation buttons. In all versions of ImageCast X, the device can be configured with additional accessible features for voters with disabilities. (And if voters skip any contests, the screen indicates “ Under_vote.”) After voters are finished marking all their preferred choices, the device presents a “review page” that allows voters to double-check their choices on their ballot. The ImageCast X device allows voters to mark choices on the touchscreen display. In BMD and DRE configurations, to begin the voting process, voters insert a “voter activation card,” which is configured with a voter’s ballot style during the voter check-in process after the activation card is inserted, the ImageCast X automatically displays the proper version of an electronic ballot. Whether ImageCast X is deployed as a marking device only, or as a DRE, these configurations are not interchangeable. It is often used as an assistive device, but is also deployed in some jurisdictions for use by all in-person voters. It is used in some other jurisdictions, with several municipalities in Wisconsin adding the ImageCast X DRE in 2022. Most Nevada counties have used ImageCast X DREs since 2018 and all of Louisiana uses the ImageCast X DRE for early voting. ![]() ![]() The ImageCast X is most commonly deployed as a BMD, with an attached commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) laser printer. Held at the Jewish Museum in New York in 1966, this exhibit turned out to be a critical and media success. ‘Primary Structures’ at the Jewish MuseumĪ key point for the minimalist art movement was additionally the group exhibit entitled ‘Primary Structures’, that featured works by Dan Flavin, Sol LeWitt, Robert Morris, Donald Judd and Tony Smith. As such, they turned towards the polar end of this spectrum, creating works that attempted to be wholly objective, inexpressive, and non-referential. Overarching motivations for Minimalist artists and the necessity for its movement consisted of their disdain towards how abstract expressionist art reflected too much of its creator they felt these works were pretentious, unnecessarily personal, yet unsubstantial in subject and context. ![]() Minimalism rose to prominence in the early 1960s, rather soon after Abstract Expressionism dominated the 50s. Through the removal of decorative, figurative, and representational elements, minimalist art focused on the textural and material elements in a pure abstract form. Minimalism was ground-breaking because it removed all forms of self-expression and individuality – something that was unlike any previous art movement. In contrast to the loose and gestural works of Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline, younger artists in turn started to favour sleek, simple, and reductionist techniques in their works as opposed to the active and spontaneity that constituted abstract expressionist painting. Geometric lines meet a tangent of utmost simplicity, and forms deliberately lack expressive content.īy the late 1950s, there was a stark change in attitudes towards painting and sculpture that saw a marked deviation from the emotive and physical sensibilities that characterised much of the Abstract Expressionist movement in the 1940s and 50s. The movement constitutes of a school of abstraction devoid of personal expression – or at least where personal expression is kept to a minimum. Artist’s did not pretend to represent anything other than what it was. With minimalist artists focusing primarily on the surface of the canvas and the aesthetic quality of materials, their works have been closely linked with notions pertaining to truth and honesty. It is a genre that has been widely associated with conceptual art, which during the 1960s, was extremely radical in that it challenged pre-existing structures of making, viewing, and understanding art. Considered an extension of abstract art, minimalism removes all essential forms in order to expose the purity and beauty of the art object. The art movement was truly ground-breaking for its time, as it saw artists focusing on highlighting the very true essence of the medium and material to form the art itself. During this period, the art world saw a major transition particularly amongst younger artists whose works began to actively reject and move away from abstract expressionism. Minimalism is a popular art movement that developed in the late 1950s and early 60s.
